Abgleich (Synchronisieren)

  • Alles, was dein Gerät verlässt, ist verschlüsselt.

So geht's:

WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, NAS)

So geht's:

  1. Abgleich › Cloud-Abgleich › WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, NAS …).
  2. Server-Adresse eintragen, z. B. https://cloud.example.org. Bei Nextcloud genügt die Adresse des Servers.
  3. Benutzer und App-Passwort eintragen. Bei Nextcloud erstellst du ein App-Passwort unter Einstellungen › Sicherheit. Nimm nicht dein normales Passwort.
  4. Ordner wählen (Vorgabe Notenpult).
  5. Verbindung testen tippen.

Google Drive

So geht's:

  1. Abgleich › Cloud-Abgleich › Google Drive.

So geht's:

So geht's:

  1. Abgleich › Dateien › Als Datei exportieren.

So geht's:

  1. Am Windows-/Android-Gerät: Abgleich › Browser/iPad › Mit Browser/iPad abgleichen. Es erscheint ein Code.
  2. Im Browser: Abgleich › Windows-/Android-Gerät › Mit Gerät verbinden und den Code scannen.

  1. Abgleich › Konfliktkopien.

Sync

How the scores, setlists and annotations of a group reach all members' devices – live in the Wi-Fi, through cloud storage or by file.

Overview

The sync settings

All sync settings are under group switcher › Sync… (or in Members… via the Sync icon at the top right). Sync always applies to the group that is currently open.

There are several ways, and you can combine them:

  • In the same Wi-Fi – the easiest way: devices find each other and sync live (Live in the Wi-Fi).
  • Cloud sync – directly via Google Drive or WebDAV (e.g. Nextcloud), also in the browser; on Windows also through the folder of a sync tool (Cloud sync).
  • Files – export a sync file and pass it on (As a file).
  • Browser/iPad – via two QR codes with a Windows or Android device (Browser and iPad).

At the top of Sync you see the state: Syncing… or Last synced …, and the cause if something failed.

Important on stage:

  • Every sync pauses in performance mode. Afterwards it continues by itself and catches up. Stage coupling (lead/follow) keeps running though (see Coupling).
  • Everything that leaves your device is encrypted. Only members of the group can read it; private content only your own devices.
  • Notenpult opens no connection without you: sync only starts when you switch it on, join a group, invite someone or pair devices.
  • App settings are never synced – each device keeps its own.

Live in the same Wi-Fi

Under Sync › Local network switch on Sync in the same Wi-Fi. Joining, inviting and pairing switch it on for you.

While the app is open, the group's devices in the same Wi-Fi find each other by themselves and stay connected. The status then shows e.g. Live – 3 devices connected. Changes appear on the other devices within seconds – also in the score that is currently open (except in performance mode). If you are drawing a stroke at that moment, the other person's stroke is added afterwards. Undo never removes other people's strokes.

Other messages:

  • Starts as soon as the group has more members or paired devices.
  • Active – no device found yet or Active – 1 device found.
  • Paused (performance mode or app in the background).

Good to know:

  • Only Windows and Android sync directly in the Wi-Fi. Android only while the app is in the foreground.
  • On Windows the firewall asks the first time whether Notenpult may communicate on the network (see Firewall).
  • In large groups not every device has a direct connection to every other one; the devices pass changes on among each other.

Connect by QR code

Some networks do not let devices find each other – typically guest Wi-Fis with "client isolation" or company networks. Then use Sync › Connect by QR code (shown when Wi-Fi sync is on).

How to:

  1. On one device tap Connect by QR code. It shows a QR code and its address.
  2. On the other device also tap Connect by QR code, then choose Code of the other device and scan or paste the code.
  3. The devices connect and report Synced.

If this does not work either, the network blocks all connections between devices. A way out is the hotspot of a tablet or phone that all devices join.

Cloud sync

Cloud sync works directly through cloud storage – without a sync tool and also in the browser. Everything is stored there encrypted.

It is enough if one device of the group has access: it passes on what it gets from the others in the Wi-Fi, and the other way round.

Under Sync › Cloud sync choose:

One way is enough; once one is set up, the section shows only that one.

Once set up, the app syncs every minute in the foreground, never in performance mode. Sync now starts it right away. Disconnect deletes the access data from this device (Google: access is revoked); the encrypted files in the cloud stay.

The access data stays on this device only and is stored protected.

WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, NAS)

How to:

  1. Sync › Cloud sync › WebDAV (Nextcloud, ownCloud, NAS …).
  2. Enter the Server address, e.g. https://cloud.example.org. For Nextcloud the server address is enough.
  3. Enter User and App password. In Nextcloud you create an app password under Settings › Security. Do not use your normal password.
  4. Choose the Folder (default Notenpult).
  5. Tap Test connection. The app creates the folder and checks that it may write: Connection works – the folder is writable.
  6. Only then tap Activate.

Only https:// addresses are allowed.

Common messages: User or app password is wrong., Folder or address not found., The server redirects – please enter the exact WebDAV address., The cloud storage is full.

Google Drive

How to:

  1. Sync › Cloud sync › Google Drive.
  2. Tap Sign in with Google and agree in the sign-in window.
  3. The app creates the folder "Notenpult" in your Drive.

The app sees only the folder it creates itself – not your other files. Other Google accounts do not see this folder. Google Drive is therefore mainly a bridge: one member with Drive passes on what they get in the Wi-Fi.

Good to know:

  • In the browser the sign-in lasts only one hour. Then Sign in again appears.
  • On Windows the sign-in opens the system browser, on Android a browser window inside the app.
  • If Google Drive is missing from the choices, it is not available in your version. Use WebDAV instead.

Folder of a sync program

For advanced users on Windows: a folder that a sync tool (OneDrive, Google Drive for desktop, Dropbox, the Nextcloud client, Syncthing or similar) keeps in sync with the other members. On Android and in the browser use Google Drive or WebDAV.

How to:

  1. Every member has the same shared folder on their device (set up with the sync tool).
  2. Sync › Cloud sync › Folder of a sync program and select the folder.
  3. Confirm with Use folder.

Notenpult then syncs every minute while the app is open, and right away when another device has put new files there. Sync now starts it by hand. Stop using folder ends syncing through this folder; files already there stay.

Each device writes only into its own subfolder, and everything is encrypted. The cloud provider cannot read anything, not even titles. Scores that are open in the viewer are updated only after you close them.

Exchange as a file

No network and no cloud: export a sync file (.npsync) and pass it on, e.g. by USB stick, messenger or e-mail.

How to:

  1. Sync › Files › Export as file.
  2. Choose whether to Include PDFs, images and audio. Without them the file stays small; setlists still find the scores on the receiving side if the same files are already there.
  3. Save and pass it on.
  4. The receiver chooses Sync › Import file. The file is merged into their group.

Other ways to export:

  • Selected scores: select several scores in the library (long press) and tap Export as file.
  • One setlist: Export as file in the setlist's menu.

The file is encrypted – only members of this group can import it. In the personal group you can choose Without encryption; the file is then readable by any Notenpult, e.g. to copy scores into another group (they are added there as copies).

Sync from backup

Sync › Sync from backup merges a backup (.npbak) into the group instead of replacing it. You can also do this when restoring a backup with Merge into this group (see Restore). Your current state wins; differences end up as conflict copies.

Browser and iPad

A browser (e.g. Safari on the iPad) cannot find other devices in the Wi-Fi. It therefore syncs over a direct, encrypted connection with a Windows or Android device. You exchange the connection setup by QR code – in both directions.

How to:

  1. On the Windows/Android device: Sync › Browser/iPad › Sync with a browser/iPad. A code appears.
  2. In the browser: Sync › Windows/Android device › Connect to a device and scan the code.
  3. The browser shows a code of its own. On the Windows/Android device tap Scan the browser's code and scan it.
  4. The connection starts by itself: Synced (… received).

Both devices must have the same group open and be in the same Wi-Fi (no guest Wi-Fi with client isolation). As long as the app stays open in the browser, sync continues live over this connection. After a restart you need both scans again.

With Connect to a device the browser can also join a group or pair as one of your own devices (see Groups).

Conflicts and deleting

Notenpult merges changes from several devices. Annotations are merged stroke by stroke, metadata field by field. Only when two devices change the same thing at the same time (e.g. the page order or a setlist) does one version win; the other is kept as a conflict copy.

How to get a version back:

  1. Sync › Conflict copies.
  2. Tapping an entry shows the content of that version.
  3. Tap Restore this version (where possible). Delete copies you no longer need with the trash icon Discard copy.

If you change someone else's score or setlist, sync reverts it and keeps your version as a conflict copy. Strokes on other people's layers that you may not edit end up in a private layer of your own.

Deleted for everyone

When you delete a shared score or setlist, it disappears for the whole group. In the trash (Settings › Library › Trash) it then appears under Deleted for everyone. Restore makes it visible to the group again; annotations of others were kept. More under Trash.

Newer version

If data comes from a device with a newer Notenpult version, your device leaves it untouched and shows a notice in the library (see Newer version).
